When a dog displays bad behavior such as chewing your shoe or tearing up your furniture, you should correct the behavior at that moment, rather than correcting them after the fact. The only way to correct the behavior is to actually catch them in the act. For example, if you catch your dog chewing up your shoe, you should correct them at that moment. To correct this behavior, you should take up the shoe and tell them “no.” Keep in mind as I’ve stated earlier, you have to catch them in the act in order to correct them.
If you found out that they chewed up your shoe earlier, you cannot correct them because they will not know what they’re being corrected for. This will also confuse them. They cannot reason out the fact that if they didn’t tear up your shoe to begin with you wouldn’t be mad at them. Since dogs do not live in the past, they react to situations in the present time. You need to have patience and good timing or your dog will not listen to you.
When you punish your dog, you are usually frustrated and angry. An example of punishing would be, physically hitting or locking them up in their crate for an extended period of time as their punishment. This does not correct their bad behavior but only confuses them which will eventually lead to other behavior issues. I strongly advise against this because, your dog will become fearful of you and think that you are trying to harm them. Remember, patience is key when dealing with your dog.
